This month at Primary Tutor Project, we have been all about maths. From boosting your child’s maths skills to tackling struggles, one thing stands out: daily practice is key.
But let’s be honest, getting children to sit down and do maths every day is not always easy. If your child groans at the thought of extra maths, you are not alone. So, how can you turn daily practice into something they actually enjoy?
Here at Primary Tutor Project, we understand. We have helped many parents make maths fun and stress-free, and today we are sharing simple and engaging ways to practice maths with your child every day.
Make Maths Part of Everyday Life
Cooking and Baking
Let your child help in the kitchen. Measuring ingredients is a great way to practice fractions and multiplication. Plus, who doesn’t love a bit of taste testing?
Grocery Shopping
Turn shopping into a mini maths lesson. Ask your child to add up prices, work out change, or compare deals. For example, if apples are £1.50 per bag and we buy two, how much will it cost?
Play Games That Use Maths
Board Games
Games like Monopoly, Uno, and Snakes and Ladders sneak in maths without it feeling like learning. Counting spaces, adding scores, and making change all help develop number skills.
Maths Apps
If screen time is a battle, why not make it educational? There are plenty of apps that turn maths into a game, keeping children entertained while they learn.
Use Real-Life Situations
Sports Scores
Whether your child loves football, cricket, or gymnastics, tracking scores and stats is a fun way to work with numbers. Try asking: If your team scores three more goals, how many will they have in total?
Guess the Number
Fill a jar with marbles, sweets, or pasta and have your child estimate how many are inside. Then count them together to see how close they were.
Build a Daily Maths Routine
Short and Sweet Sessions
A few minutes a day is all it takes. Whether it is flashcards, a quick quiz, or a puzzle, little and often is the key to progress.
One Step at a Time
Focus on one concept before moving on. Mastering small chunks makes maths feel easier and boosts confidence.
By making maths part of everyday life, you can help your child become more confident and comfortable with numbers. It does not have to be a chore; it can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your child. And remember, every little bit counts. Even just a few minutes each day makes a difference.
