Do international school students need an English tutor?

21 May 2026

It's easy to assume that HK children in international schools don't need extra English support. They're being taught in English, surrounded by English, and often performing well enough that there's no obvious cause for concern. But assumption and reality don't always match up.

In practice, many HK international school students have gaps that aren't immediately visible, and those gaps have a habit of becoming more significant as the curriculum demands increase.

The gap between spoken and written English

One of the most common patterns is a child who speaks English confidently but struggles when it comes to writing. Spoken English and written English are different skills, and fluency in one doesn't automatically produce fluency in the other. Writing requires structure, vocabulary, grammar, and the ability to organise ideas coherently on the page. For many students, these skills need to be taught and practised explicitly.

Reading comprehension at a deeper level

International school curriculums, particularly those following British frameworks, place a strong emphasis on reading comprehension that goes beyond surface understanding. Students are expected to infer meaning, analyse language, and respond to texts in structured and reasoned ways. This is genuinely difficult, and it's an area where even capable students often need targeted support.

Keeping pace with increasing demands

International schools move quickly. As students progress through primary school, the complexity of reading and writing tasks increases steadily. A small gap in year three can become a more significant one by year five if it isn't addressed. Tuition can help students stay on top of that curve rather than falling behind it.

Stretch and challenge for higher-achieving students

It's also worth saying that tuition isn't only for students who are struggling. For children who are performing well, targeted support can provide stretch and challenge beyond what the classroom has time to offer, helping them develop skills and confidence that will serve them well into secondary school.
