Getting Ready for Your Online Lesson

Your child’s first lesson is designed to be relaxed, welcoming and confidence-building. Please follow these three simple steps to help everything run smoothly.

1. Check Your Setup
2. Try the Demo Classroom
3. Join Your Lesson
1

Check Your Setup

Before the lesson, please make sure your device, browser and internet connection are ready.

Recommended Browsers

  • Computer or Android device: use Google Chrome, version 15+.
  • iPad or iOS device: use Safari, version 16+.
  • Older Apple device? It may no longer receive updates, which means it may not work properly. Please check this before your lesson.

Optimise Your Internet Connection

  • Minimum speeds: at least 5 Mb/s download and 3 Mb/s upload.
  • Go wired: use a wired Ethernet connection for maximum stability, if possible.
  • Reduce strain: close unnecessary tabs, streaming services and other video call apps.
  • Move closer: if using Wi-Fi, sit as close to your router as possible.
2

Try the Demo Classroom

If this is your child’s first lesson, give them 5–10 minutes to explore the demo classroom before their session.

In the demo classroom, please check:

  • That your camera connects properly.
  • That your microphone and sound are working.
  • That your child can use the classroom tools.
  • That your child has tried the space game, which helps them practise using the online classroom.
3

Join Your Lesson

You can find your lesson on your Primary Tutor Project dashboard.

At your lesson time:

  1. Log in to your Primary Tutor Project account.
  2. Go to your dashboard.
  3. Find your booked lesson.
  4. Click the camera button to enter the classroom.

Important: If this is your first lesson, you will need to check your camera and sound before entering the classroom. Please allow a few extra minutes for this.

Watch: How to Join Your Lesson

This short video shows you where to find your lesson and how to enter the classroom.

What to Expect in the First Lesson

The first lesson is designed to help your child feel comfortable and give the tutor a chance to understand how they learn best.

A warm introduction

Your tutor will spend time getting to know your child and helping them settle in.

Simple activities

The lesson may include short tasks to understand your child’s strengths and next steps.

Confidence first

Our aim is for your child to leave feeling encouraged, supported and ready for future lessons.

Common Questions

Do I need to stay with my child?

For younger children, we recommend being nearby for the first few minutes while they settle and check their camera and sound.

What if we have technical difficulties?

Please refresh the page, rejoin the classroom, or try another device if available. You can also contact our team for support.

Can my child use an iPad?

Yes, but please use Safari version 16+ and check that the device is fully updated before the lesson.

Still Need Help?

If you're unsure about anything, just send us a message. We'd much rather help beforehand than have you worrying about technology on lesson day.

Whether you need help accessing your lesson, testing your camera and microphone, or navigating the online classroom, we're always happy to help.
